New Delhi:  Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alongside key figures such as Professor Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairperson of AICTE, and Sanjay Murthy, Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, unveiled the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings for 2024. This year’s rankings brought attention to the standout performances of India’s premier educational institutions, with Hindu College in New Delhi emerging as the top-ranked college, surpassing last year's leader, Miranda House.

Miranda House, which had held the top position last year, has now been ranked second. St. Stephen’s College, another esteemed institution in New Delhi, secured the third spot, indicating a reshuffling at the top compared to the previous year’s rankings. In 2023, Miranda House led the rankings, followed by Hindu College and Presidency College in Chennai. Miranda House had dominated the rankings for two consecutive years, in 2022 and 2023.

The NIRF 2024 rankings expanded to cover 16 categories, up from 13 last year. New categories introduced this year include state universities, skill universities, and open universities. The rankings continue to cover essential areas such as overall institutional performance, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation. Notably, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras retained its number one position in the overall category for the sixth consecutive year, reaffirming its status as India’s top institution. IIT Madras also continued its dominance as the leading engineering college, a title it has held for nine years. Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru was recognised as the best university in the country.

In the management category, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta remained in the top five, confirming their positions as the leading business schools in India.

Now in its ninth edition, the NIRF ranking framework evaluates institutions based on five key parameters: teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. These criteria offer a comprehensive assessment of each institution’s performance across multiple dimensions, with this year’s rankings highlighting the dynamic and evolving landscape of higher education in India. /BI
