Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has upgraded 60 trains, involving 95 rakes, to modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) rakes as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance train safety and passenger comfort. This transition replaces the older Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches with LHB coaches, which feature advanced safety systems, including Fire and Smoke Detection Systems (FSDS), Fire Detection and Suppression Systems (FDSS), aspiration-type smoke detectors, and aerosol-based fire detection systems.

According to Chief Public Relations Officer Sabyasachi De, during the 2023-24 period, 10 pairs of long-distance trains operating on important routes have been converted to LHB rakes, replacing the conventional ones. These LHB coaches are designed with modern hydraulic shock absorbers and an improved suspension system, providing greater riding comfort for passengers. They are also manufactured with anti-collision technology, resulting in fewer fatalities during accidents. Each coach is equipped with an Advanced Pneumatic Disc Brake System for efficient braking at higher speeds. /BI

As of now, NFR operates 912 AC coaches, 822 Sleeper Class coaches, 129 luggage vans, and 67 pantry cars with LHB models. The conversion of old ICF coaches into LHB coaches is part of Indian Railways' broader safety initiative aimed at providing enhanced safety and improved comfort for its commuters.
