Cabinet extends tenure of National Commission for Safai Karamcharis until 2028

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) for three years beyond 31 March 2025, extending its tenure until 31 March 2028. The decision involves a financial allocation of approximately Rs 50.91 crore.

The extension aims to support the socio-economic upliftment of sanitation workers, improve working conditions in the sanitation sector, and enhance efforts to eliminate hazardous cleaning-related fatalities.

The NCSK is tasked with recommending specific programmes to address inequalities faced by sanitation workers, studying and monitoring their working conditions, and investigating grievances related to the implementation of government schemes. The commission also makes recommendations to the central and state governments on matters concerning sanitation workers' welfare.

Under the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, the NCSK monitors the implementation of the law, investigates violations, advises governments on effective enforcement, and takes suo-motu action on non-compliance.

The commission was originally constituted in August 1994 following the enactment of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Act, 1993.
