New Delhi: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has inaugurated the Oxygen Bird Park, also known as Amrit Mahotsav Park, along the Nagpur-Hyderabad National Highway-44 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. This eco-initiative, developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), spans 8.23 hectares, with 2.5 hectares designated for social forestry. The park is designed to serve as a natural habitat for various bird species while providing a recreational area for both locals and visitors. With a development cost of ₹14.31 crores, the project aims to harmonise environmental sustainability with community enjoyment.
 

The concept for the park emerged from Gadkari's suggestion to develop a space where citizens could observe and appreciate the diverse bird life of Central India. The park, situated at the Clover Leaf intersection near the Jamtha International Cricket Stadium, integrates features to support the conservation of local and migratory birds within a setting that mimics natural ecosystems.
 

Key ecological elements of the park include an area dedicated to rare and endangered tree species, such as the Vulnerable Indian Bael and the Endangered Yellow Flame of the Forest. A lotus and lily pad pond will provide habitat for water birds while also helping to recharge underground aquifers. Additionally, a reed bed located behind the pond will create a nurturing environment for migratory birds, while a bambusetum will feature native bamboo species to combat pollution and enhance soil quality.
 

Visitor amenities include pathways for walking, jogging, and cycling, a food court, modern restrooms, and elevated watchtowers for panoramic views. The landscaping promotes biodiversity with a variety of native trees and plants that attract local wildlife.
 

To support environmental sustainability, the park incorporates solar energy for lighting and facilities, promoting a greener approach. The initiative, emphasising the importance of "Oxygen Parks," aims to combat air pollution through the planting of fast-growing, oxygen-producing trees. The Social Forestry Division of Nagpur is actively involved in developing and maintaining these green spaces.
 

The inauguration event was attended by local MPs, MLAs, and senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and NHAI.
