New Delhi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is set to install one lakh indigenously developed 4G sites across India, with equipment that can be upgraded to 5G. This initiative is part of the company’s efforts to enhance connectivity in rural and underserved regions. BSNL has been tasked with executing several critical government projects, including the 4G Saturation Scheme, telecom infrastructure upgrades in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, and improving coverage at Border Outposts and in the Lakshadweep Islands.
The Union Cabinet recently approved the amended BharatNet programme, aiming to expand high-speed FTTH broadband access in rural areas. Under this programme, which BSNL is managing, 1.5 crore FTTH connections will be provided across all states and Union Territories.
To further strengthen telecom infrastructure in the North East Region, the government is implementing multiple initiatives under the Digital Bharat Nidhi scheme. These include the 4G Saturation project to extend mobile services to previously uncovered villages, mobile connectivity for Border Outposts and Intelligence Posts, and the Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan to cover remote areas and national highways in the region.
The BharatNet project is also progressing in phases, targeting broadband connectivity for all Gram Panchayats and villages on demand, bringing essential digital services closer to rural communities.
