New Delhi: Coal India Limited has announced a cumulative investment of ₹5,570 crore in Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives over the past decade, demonstrating its commitment to social development in the regions where it operates. The figures were shared by Chairman P M Prasad at the 3rd CIL CSR Conclave 2024, where the company’s efforts in education, healthcare, skill development, sports, and women’s empowerment were highlighted as its primary focus areas.
Healthcare emerged as a key priority, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of the total CSR spending, amounting to ₹2,770 crore. The company exceeded its statutory CSR obligation of ₹4,265 crore by 31 per cent, spending an additional ₹1,314 crore.
Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt commended the CSR projects undertaken by coal companies over the past decade, particularly their positive impact on coal-bearing regions. He proposed the adoption of a theme-based CSR calendar, suggesting education as a priority for January.
West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose also lauded the transformative role of CSR initiatives in improving the lives of tribal communities in coal-rich areas. He acknowledged CIL’s contribution to healthcare, particularly its support for cancer patients, and emphasised the significance of such efforts in the nation’s development.
The company has strategically directed 95 per cent of its CSR funds to eight operational states, focusing on Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. This approach aims to uplift economically disadvantaged communities in coal-bearing regions.
As Coal India continues to refine its CSR strategies, it plans to strengthen its contributions to social and environmental welfare, ensuring that its operations are complemented by meaningful interventions that benefit millions of people.
