Agartala: Tripura has reported a significant decrease in its crime rate in 2024, marking the lowest levels in ten years, according to Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan, IPS on October 4, 2024. After reviewing police stations and outposts in Khowai district, the DGP emphasised the proactive measures taken by the state police to maintain law and order, reduce general crime, and ensure peaceful Durga Puja celebrations.
Following a review meeting with Chief Minister Manik Saha earlier this week, new directives were issued to police stations and ground-level security personnel. Ranjan highlighted that the police are enhancing efforts to ensure public safety during the festive season. Senior police officials have been visiting police stations, Tripura State Rifles (TSR) camps, and other security posts to identify potential security gaps and improve infrastructure.
“We have initiated comprehensive reviews of our policing systems, and welfare activities are also being addressed to boost the efficiency of our force,” Ranjan said, adding that Tripura Police has shown significant improvement in curbing crime, with the last few elections passing without any major incidents.
To ensure a peaceful Durga Puja, Ranjan revealed that a large-scale deployment of forces is in the pipeline, with orders expected soon. The police are also cracking down on forceful collection of donations, with strict directives in place to prevent such practices.
“This year, we have recorded the lowest crime rate in ten years. In 2014, the total crime figure stood at 4,026, while by August 2024, it dropped to 2,700. Despite population growth and challenges, we have successfully controlled and reduced crime,” he noted.
He also pointed to a considerable decline in crimes against women, with figures dropping from 2,700 between 2014 and 2016 to 1,500 from 2022 to 2024. Physical violence cases have decreased from 2,800 to 2,500, while property-related offences have gone down from 1,240 to around 800.
