Fazilka Police’s 'Mission Nischay' marks milestone in fight against drug abuse

Fazilka: There is a quiet revolution happening in the villages bordering Pakistan in Punjab's Fazilka district. Given the critical geography and the vulnerability of youth to drug abuse, the Fazilka Police have launched a unique initiative called "Mission Nishchay." This mission aims to create drug-free communities across villages and cities. Over the past four months, 1,350 individuals have been arrested, including 431 drug peddlers and 919 others wanted for serious crimes.

Spearheaded by the Punjab Police in District Fazilka and launched on June 26, 2024, this initiative seeks to protect youth from the perils of drug abuse. Collaborating with Border Security Forces and Village Defense Committees, the police are engaging with residents along international borders to gather intelligence on the supply and demand of illicit substances and take decisive action against major offenders.

"Under Mission Nishchay, the Fazilka Police have made significant strides against drug-related activities," said Dr. Pragya Jain, SSP Fazilka. "We have confiscated properties worth Rs. 4.2 cr from accused drug peddlers. So far, 333 drug peddlers and 189 other suspects have been apprehended."

The mission employs a combination of technical, social media, and human intelligence measures to gather local intelligence. "Additionally, 60 drug addicts have voluntarily entered de-addiction centers, and 214 Panchayats have passed resolutions against drug use," added Dr. Jain.

On July 18, 2024, a Mega Athletic Meet was organized as part of Mission Nishchay, drawing over 650 participants, including many from border villages. This event followed a month of daily Village Defense Committee meetings led by GOs, which attracted more than 2,000 attendees, showcasing strong community engagement.
