Mussoorie: Birds In & Around Mussoorie, a book authored by IAS officer Sanjay Kumar, was officially released at a function held at Welcome Hotel The Savoy. The book, which details the bird species found in and around Mussoorie, was launched by Uttarakhand Governor Gurmit Singh.

Sanjay Kumar, a 2002 batch IAS officer, explained that the book is the result of decades of research, with the first edition being published in 2014. The book documents 150 bird species, complete with photographs and descriptions, and aims to inspire tourists and young people to engage more deeply with the natural world, particularly the birdlife of Mussoorie.

The event also featured a panel discussion on conservation and eco-tourism, with contributions from Dhananjay Mohan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, author Ganesh Saili, and historian Lokesh Ohri. They discussed the importance of preserving Mussoorie’s natural environment and promoting sustainable tourism in the region.

Governor Singh highlighted the importance of the book as a resource for bird enthusiasts and tourists. He linked the publication to the theme of World Tourism Day, Tourism and Peace, noting that birds are often seen as symbols of peace. He also invited tourists to visit Uttarakhand to experience its natural beauty, which includes the Himalayas, rivers, and forests.

During the event, a postage stamp titled Mussoorie: A Paradise for Birds was also unveiled by the Postal Department. The stamp aims to promote bird tourism in the region, further emphasising Mussoorie’s reputation as a birdwatcher's destination.

Sanjay Kumar’s book is expected to be an important reference for tourists, conservationists, and educators interested in the region’s bird diversity. The event saw attendance from local dignitaries, authors, and conservation experts.
