Ludhiana: Compassion is what makes a police officer different from others, which was proved so befittingly by IPS officer Dr Pragya Jain. On February 16, a minor rape survivor, suffering from down sydrome, was found abandoned at a local facility. When IPS officer Dr Jain came to know about this, she took it upon herself to provide her care and support.

After seeing the child in torment, the 2017-batch IPS officer couldn't hold her back and decided to stay with her at the hospital. She remained awake throughout the first night when the rape survivor could not sleep in the hospital.

This child was left at the hospital by her mother on February 10. Initially her mother stated that the survivor was assaulted at the school but the CCTV footage contradicted what she said. Soon the police launched an investigation into this and found out that the survivor's own brother had committed the sin. 

To ensure the child gets all the support to overcome this traumatic experience, counselling with the Child Welfare Committee and Social and Child Welfare Department and monetary support with the help of NGOs were arranged. 

To make sure the investigation is fair, the Commissioner of Police has formed a three-member special investigation team (SIT) comprising JCP City Deepak Pareek and ADCPs Dr Pragya Jain and Rupinder Kaur Sra.

The SIT has been asked to submit the report at the earliest. The Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairman Rajinder Singh also met the survivor. He directed the district administration to compensate the victim through the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). /BI/
