Nagaland's Pritpal Kaur honoured with global policing award

Kohima: Pritpal Kaur, a 2016 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Phek district, Nagaland, has been recognised by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) as one of the 2024 "IACP 40 Under 40" awardees. She is the only Indian among the group of police officers under the age of 40 to receive this prestigious award.

The IACP, a global organisation dedicated to enhancing public safety, selected professionals from six different countries for this recognition. The awardees were chosen for their leadership and commitment to law enforcement, regardless of their rank or role within their agencies.

Dr Kaur has had a distinguished career in the IPS, including her tenure as the first SP of the border district Noklak in Nagaland. She has been instrumental in maintaining peace along international borders, using her negotiation skills to resolve land disputes and avert border clashes. Additionally, she has led anti-drug initiatives, rehabilitating hundreds of individuals through treatment, counselling, and livelihood support.

Originally trained as a dentist, Dr Kaur’s passion for policing was evident from her school days, where she served as the captain of her sports team. Throughout her career, she has engaged in numerous police-community projects, frequently working in remote areas that required police assistance.

In recognition of her contributions, Dr Kaur has received several awards, including the International Inspiration Women Award 2023, Skoch Gold Award 2023, Women Power India Award 2023, and the Global Women Leader Award 2024.

One of her most cherished honours is the tribal name given to her by the Khiamnuingan Naga community in Nagaland, where she was adopted and named "Themshao Lam," a title that commemorates a grandmother known for her sacrifices and protection of the community.

Dr Kaur will travel to Boston, Massachusetts, on October 22, 2024 to receive the IACP award.
