Dehradun: A consignment of 1,000 kg of seedless lychee from Uttarakhand’s Doon Valley has been shipped to Italy, opening the door for the state’s entry into European markets and creating fresh opportunities for local growers.
The shipment was dispatched on June 18 with support from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the Uttarakhand Horticulture Department.
Known for its sweetness and distinct aroma, Dehradun lychee has remained largely confined to domestic markets due to its short shelf life. The fruit typically begins to lose quality within a few days of harvest, making overseas transportation difficult.
Recent improvements in post-harvest handling, packaging and cold-chain logistics have helped overcome this challenge. During transit, the fruit is stored at a temperature of around 5°C, allowing it to retain its freshness while travelling to international destinations.
Uttarakhand Agriculture Minister Ganesh Joshi said the state had strengthened its post-harvest infrastructure to support the export initiative.
“With the support of APEDA, preparations have been made to ensure lychees can be safely exported this season,” Joshi said. He expressed confidence that if the consignment meets quality standards in Italy, it could pave the way for wider exports across Europe and other international markets.
According to APEDA technical expert N.C. Shah, improved storage and transportation systems can help growers reach more remunerative markets.
“Lychee is a highly perishable fruit, and exporting it has always been a challenge. With the new system extending shelf life, farmers can access better markets and secure improved prices,” he said.
Officials said efforts are now focused on ensuring that produce meets the requirements of international buyers. R.K. Singh, Director of the Horticulture Department, said quality compliance has been a key factor behind the export.
“Our emphasis is on producing fruit that complies with global standards. That is what has enabled Dehradun lychee to reach European markets,” he said.
The state government is also exploring ways to expand export channels and strengthen processing infrastructure for horticultural produce. Officials believe successful acceptance of the consignment in Italy could help position Uttarakhand’s lychee in other overseas markets in the coming years.
