SEMICON India a strategic event, providing a platform for all major semiconductor supply chain players: Akash Tripathi, CEO, Indian Semiconductor Mission

New Delhi: India’s semiconductor landscape is poised for a transformative leap as it prepares to host SEMICON India 2024 from 11th to 13th September 2024 at India Exposition Mart Ltd. (IEML) in Greater Noida, Delhi NCR. The prestigious event will bring together global semiconductor industry leaders, policymakers, innovators, and academics to engage in critical discussions aimed at strengthening India’s position in the global semiconductor ecosystem. The event will offer valuable insights into innovations and trends in key areas such as smart manufacturing, supply chain management, sustainability, and workforce development.

SEMICON India: shaping the semiconductor future

In a joint press briefing organised by SEMI and India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) today, Akash Tripathi, CEO of the Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM), mentioned that SEMICON India stands as a strategic event, providing a platform for all major semiconductor supply chain players. With more than 250 participating companies from 24 different countries, the event will showcase India's growing presence in this critical sector. These companies span the entire semiconductor supply chain, from equipment manufacturers to fabs, presenting a significant opportunity for business-to-business interaction and forging new partnerships.

"In India, with the ongoing construction of five semiconductor projects, the need for all ecosystem components is paramount. SEMICON India provides the perfect environment for business-to-business interactions and partnerships to take place," Tripathi highlighted.

SEMICON India 2024 is not just an event; it is a reflection of India’s ambitious stride toward becoming a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing. With robust government policies, increasing investments, and strategic partnerships, India is making significant inroads in shaping the future of semiconductor manufacturing on a global scale.

Complementary events: Electronica and Productronica exhibition

Co-located with SEMICON India is the strategic Electronica and Productronica event, which underscores the complementarity between electronics manufacturing and semiconductors. "Semiconductors feed into the electronics ecosystem, and this synergy is vital for both industries' growth," he added.

A holistic approach to the semiconductor ecosystem

In the press briefing, Tripathi also emphasised the critical importance of diversifying global supply chains, a lesson underscored by the disruptions caused during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognising the need for a robust and comprehensive policy framework, India has developed policies to support every segment of the semiconductor ecosystem, not just focusing on fabs but also including packaging, display wires, OSATs, sensors, and more.

India's semiconductor ecosystem has seen significant momentum, with several landmark projects gaining approval. "Our first major project with Micron was approved at nearly Rs 22,000 crores, and Tata's joint venture with Taiwan’s Powerchip in Dholera is another shining example," Tripathi noted. Currently, there are five such proposals, with a total combined investment nearing Rs 1.52 lakh crores.

India poised to become a global semiconductor powerhouse

In the joint press briefing today, Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, underscored India's unique advantages in becoming a global semiconductor powerhouse. In his address, he highlighted India's strong foundation in design capacity, a large talent pool, and the backing of world-class educational institutions as key factors positioning the country for success in the semiconductor sector. Additionally, he noted that India's status as the world’s largest democracy, combined with its respect for international law and intellectual property protection, creates a business-friendly environment for the semiconductor industry.

“SEMICON India 2024 and the Semiconductor Executive Summit will provide the foundation to further build India’s capabilities, making it a critical hub in the global semiconductor landscape,” he added.

Semiconductor Executives' Summit

The Semiconductor Executives' Summit will also be held tomorrow, 10th September 2024, at Bharat Mandapam. Ahead of the summit, while speaking at the joint press briefing on the Semiconductor Executive Summit and Semicon India 2024 events, Akash Tripathi remarked:
"We are at the early stages of developing our semiconductor ecosystem, and it is crucial that we learn from the experiences of other countries. The Semiconductor Executive Summit will provide us with a platform to engage in discussions on best practices, as well as identify the do's and don'ts of fostering a robust semiconductor industry in India. The summit will focus on positioning India as a reliable and trusted partner in the global semiconductor supply chain."

SEMICON India 2024 will further build on these discussions with a comprehensive agenda, including opportunities for partnerships, investment, and innovation in the semiconductor space. /BI
