Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has achieved a significant milestone in green maritime technology with the delivery of West Bengal’s first Next Generation Zero-Emission Electric Ferry, named 'Dheu', to the state’s Transport Department. The official handover took place at Babughat, Kolkata, on 9 January 2025, in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Earlier in the day, the ferry was flagged off from GRSE’s Main Works Unit by Cmde P R Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE. During the flagging-off ceremony, Cmde P R Hari expressed his pride in this achievement, emphasising the shipyard’s dedication to innovation and sustainability.
“Team GRSE is proud to have designed and built the largest and fastest fully electric ferry in our nation. GRSE is playing a pivotal role in contributing to the nation's 'Net-Zero' emission goals through the construction of this vessel and other green projects in progress. I am confident that 'Dheu' will sail safely and smoothly in the Hooghly River,” he stated.
'Dheu', meaning 'Wave', is the first electric ferry constructed by GRSE and the first to be operated by the Transport Department of West Bengal. This initiative marks the beginning of a transition from ageing diesel-engine ferries to environmentally friendly alternatives along the Ganga and Bhagirathi rivers in West Bengal. The introduction of 'Dheu' is expected to significantly reduce emissions and river pollution caused by traditional diesel-powered ferries. The vessel aligns with the Maritime India Vision 2030, which aims to enhance India’s waterways for passenger and cargo transport.
The 24-metre-long ferry is powered by a 246 kilowatt-hour liquid-cooled energy storage system. It is designed to carry 150 passengers in air-conditioned comfort without noise or engine vibrations. Equipped with twin screw propellers for enhanced manoeuvrability and a catamaran aluminium hull, 'Dheu' can reach a top speed of 10 knots. Solar panels installed on the exterior supplement the battery power.
Built in compliance with the latest Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) rules for passenger safety, 'Dheu' has successfully completed harbour and afloat trials. Additionally, the West Bengal government has placed an order for 13 hybrid ferries from GRSE, which will operate on both electric and diesel propulsion systems.
'Dheu' represents a forward leap in sustainable maritime technology and a commitment to reducing the environmental impact of river transport in West Bengal.
