New Delhi: Customs officers at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi, successfully thwarted a gold smuggling attempt on 6 January 2025. An Indian national traveling from Jeddah to New Delhi on Flight No. SV-756 was apprehended at the Green Channel exit based on spot profiling techniques. Although the passenger cleared the Door Frame Metal Detector (DFMD) without triggering any alarms, X-ray scanning of his baggage revealed suspicious images.
A detailed manual inspection led to the discovery of 201 silver-coated rings cleverly concealed as metal buttons in ladies' apparel. Upon testing, the rings were confirmed to be 24-carat gold, weighing a total of 379 grams and valued at approximately ₹29 lakhs.
The gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, and further investigations are underway to identify potential accomplices and any links to organised smuggling networks.
