Guwahati: The Anti-smuggling unit of the Customs Division, Guwahati, intercepted an individual on February 12, aboard Train No. 01666 - Rani Kamlapati Special at Guwahati Railway Station. The suspect was apprehended with 26 pieces of 24-carat gold, collectively weighing 2401.31 grams.
The vigilant Customs officers, acting on specific intelligence, found the concealed gold items inside the waistline of the individual's trouser. Despite thorough scrutiny, no documents were found in connection with purchase of the gold, leading the Customs officers to seize the yellow metal on the assumption that it was illegally imported into India. Further investigations were being carried out.
The total value of the seized gold was Rs 1.53 crore. The arrested individual was taken in custody, and further investigations were being made to unveil the details of the smuggling racket.
