Kerala launches ‘New Innings’ to turn seniors into entrepreneurs and mentors

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has rolled out ‘New Innings,’ a government-backed initiative to promote entrepreneurship among senior citizens. The project, announced in the 2025-26 state budget, has been allocated Rs 5 crore for its first phase. Funds will be used to provide financial assistance, technical guidance and marketing support to eligible participants.

Designed for citizens aged 50 and above, the scheme will be implemented through the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM). It seeks to encourage elders with professional skills and experience to launch ventures, while also becoming mentors and advisors within the state’s startup ecosystem.

“With New Innings, we are embarking on a new chapter in which the knowledge and experience of our elders will not only ensure their own future but also motivate and direct the aspirations of our younger generation. This is the foundation of Nava Keralam, built on the principles of dignity, innovation and collective advancement,” Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a statement.

Finance Minister K N Balagopal said the project will enable elders with expertise in different sectors to play an active role in Kerala’s sustainable growth. The scheme will create opportunities for them to work as professional consultants, advisors, board members and mentors to startups.

According to KSUM, more than 1,000 retired professionals are expected to join as startup advisors under New Innings, with at least 100 new enterprises projected to be led or co-led by senior citizens.
