Thrills and sustainability take centre stage as Arunachal Pradesh unveils Fong Fong Ma Adventure Zone

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh has opened a new chapter in its tourism journey with the launch of the Fong Fong Ma Adventure Zone at Ma Falls, also known as Jang Waterfall, in Tawang district. This fresh push for adventure and eco-tourism aims to attract visitors from around the world while creating jobs and sustainable growth for local communities.

The adventure zone was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, signalling the government’s focus on developing underused natural spots into tourism hubs that balance excitement, cultural preservation and environmental care. Developed by the Public Works Department in Jang, the site blends breathtaking landscapes with adrenaline-pumping activities.

Among the first attractions are a 410-metre zipline soaring above dense forests and waterfalls, and a giant 30-metre swing that sends thrill-seekers sweeping through the air. Both are already proving to be crowd-pullers and are just the start of bigger plans for the area.

More adventure features are in the pipeline, including a glass-bottom bridge across the falls, bungee jumping platforms and tranquil water ponds. Trekkers can look forward to new guided trails, while visitors will soon have access to cafes, rest stops and eco-friendly facilities designed to have minimal impact on the environment.

Beyond entertainment, the project is also intended to boost local incomes. Local youth and women are being trained to manage activities, guide tourists and handle safety operations. As more tourists arrive, homestays, transport services, eateries and local crafts are expected to flourish, creating a ripple effect across the region’s economy.

This site also sits close to historic monasteries and ancient trekking routes, allowing visitors to experience local traditions and folklore alongside their outdoor adventures. Plans for cultural trails, interpretive displays and storytelling will bring Tawang’s rich heritage to life for travellers.

Since the launch, travel enthusiasts and influencers have flooded social media with images and videos of the adventure zone, branding it a “hidden gem” of Northeast India. Local tour operators are already packaging the zone into itineraries to attract more visitors.

With the Fong Fong Ma Adventure Zone, Arunachal Pradesh is showing how adventure tourism, environmental respect and community-led growth can go hand in hand. This new landmark aims to put the state on the global map for nature-based, meaningful travel while inspiring other regions to adopt similar models for sustainable development.
