RailTel to establish edge data centres in 100 locations, driving digital transformation

New Delhi: RailTel, in collaboration with Techno Electric, is set to accelerate digital transformation across India by establishing edge data centres (EDCs) in 100 locations, focusing primarily on smaller cities. These strategically placed centres will bring data processing closer to end-users, reducing latency and enhancing performance by eliminating the need to transfer data to distant facilities.

Edge data centres, compact in size and typically housed in a 10x10 room, are designed to be positioned at the network's edge, offering a hyperlocal solution to the surrounding population. By situating these EDCs along railway tracks, RailTel aims to extend low-latency digital services, including applications related to digital skills, financial inclusion, and digital literacy, to underserved rural and semi-urban areas.

Sanjay Kumar, CMD of RailTel, noted, "We expect to have 5-10 edge data centres operational by the end of this year. As we gain experience, we anticipate a smoother rollout next year." Techno Electric is already conducting site surveys to identify optimal locations for the launch.

While traditional data centres are often sited based on factors such as power availability, customer demand, and real estate costs, the placement of edge data centres will be primarily driven by the need for low-latency service delivery and access to network resources. /BI
