India boosts rail electrification with indigenous 3-phase propulsion system

New Delhi: India has taken a major step towards strengthening its rail electrification efforts with a new agreement for the development of an indigenous 3-phase propulsion system. The Ministry of Railways, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), and industry partners have come together to work on this advanced propulsion technology.

The agreement was signed in the presence of S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). This collaboration is set to accelerate the design and production of energy-efficient, high-performance systems for Indian Railways.

The focus of the project is to develop a propulsion system that not only improves operational efficiency but also supports India’s push for self-reliance in critical transport technologies. Once implemented, the new system is expected to bring significant improvements in the sustainability and performance of the country’s railway network.

The partnership brings together expertise from the public and private sectors, aiming to create solutions tailored to the specific needs of India’s rail infrastructure. By tapping into domestic capabilities, the project also aligns with broader efforts to reduce reliance on imported systems and promote local innovation.

The development of the 3-phase propulsion system is viewed as a crucial step in modernising India’s railway services, making them faster, more efficient, and better suited for the future of sustainable transportation.
