Lucknow: Ashok Kumar Singh, a 1995-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been promoted to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Singh was promoted to the DGP rank after being included in the DG panel by the Union government’s Appointments Committee of the Cabinet in June 2026. The promotion was subsequently approved by the Governor.

A native of Bihar, Singh belongs to Itaadi village in the Sonhan police station area of Bhabua block in Kaimur district. His father was Sitaram Singh.

Singh received his early education at a primary school in his village. He later studied at Sainik School Tilaiya in Hazaribagh, where he completed his intermediate education. He graduated with Physics Honours from Ramjas College in Delhi.

During his career in Uttar Pradesh, Singh has served as SSP and SP in several districts. He has also held the positions of IG and ADG in different zones.

He was promoted from IG to ADG in 2019. He subsequently served as ADG of Dial 112 and was later given responsibility for the Recruitment and Promotion Board.

Singh also served with the Central government for seven years between 2012 and 2019. During this period, he worked with the Sashastra Seema Bal, or SSB, as DIG Operations and Intelligence. He also served as IG at the SSB Frontier Headquarters in Patna.

On July 6, 2011, Singh was seriously injured while on duty during violence in Asalatpura Bagha village in the Mainather police station area of Moradabad. The violence involved an attack on a police outpost. His leadership and courage during the situation were widely appreciated.

For promotion to the DGP rank, an Indian Police Service officer is required to have completed at least 30 years of service and maintain a clean service record. Singh fulfilled these requirements before being empanelled for promotion.

With his elevation to the rank of Director General of Police, Ashok Kumar Singh joins the senior-most ranks of the Uttar Pradesh Police.
