New Delhi: Dinesh Pant’s exit from the Life Insurance Corporation of India comes barely 15 months after he took charge as Managing Director, bringing another change to the insurer’s top leadership as he prepares to move to the insurance regulator.
Pant, who joined as LIC Managing Director on June 1, 2025, has opted for voluntary retirement with effect from September 24, 2026. The move follows the government’s June decision to appoint him as a Whole-Time Member (Actuary) of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) for five years or until he turns 65, whichever is earlier.
Pant was part of a major change in LIC’s leadership last year. M Jagannath and Tablesh Pandey completed their terms as Managing Directors on May 31, 2025, after which Pant and Ratnakar Patnaik took charge. Siddhartha Mohanty completed his term as CEO and Managing Director days later, while R Doraiswamy, who was already an LIC Managing Director, took over the top post in July. Ramakrishnan Chander was also subsequently appointed as Managing Director.
Pant’s departure now changes that leadership line-up again, barely 15 months after the new team began taking shape. LIC has not yet announced his replacement.
His move also fits into a wider shift of senior public-sector insurance executives into regulatory roles. In June, the government appointed Pant and Girija Subramanian, then Chairman and Managing Director of New India Assurance, as Whole-Time Members of IRDAI. Former LIC Managing Director Bishnu Charan Patnaik had also joined the regulator as a Whole-Time Member in 2023.
For LIC, the immediate change is the vacancy at the Managing Director level. For the wider insurance sector, Pant’s move adds another example of experienced insurer executives moving from running institutions to helping regulate them.
