Adani Group announces Rs 1 lakh crore investment plan for West Bengal by 2035

Kolkata: Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Thursday announced plans to invest more than Rs 1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035, marking a major expansion of the conglomerate’s proposed presence across infrastructure, energy, logistics, healthcare and technology sectors.

The announcement came during the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Rs 4,000-crore Adani Arogya Mandir, a 2,000-bed not-for-profit medical institution coming up at New Town near Kolkata. Adani performed the bhumi pujan along with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The hospital is being developed on a 51-acre site in Action Area 2 of New Town.

The proposed Adani Arogya Mandir will include a medical college, advanced research facilities and specialised healthcare infrastructure. Of its 2,000 beds, 1,000 will be reserved for economically weaker sections eligible under state and central government health insurance schemes.

According to the company’s announcement, the healthcare project and associated institutions are expected to generate more than 10,000 jobs across West Bengal’s healthcare ecosystem.

The project is positioned as the first major component of the group’s larger investment roadmap for the state.

Adani said the group’s proposed investment of over Rs 1 lakh crore by 2035 would span ports, logistics, power generation, power transmission and distribution, roads, bridges and ropeways, green cement and hyperscale data centres.

The announcement also included support for the restoration of Kolkata’s historic Writers’ Building, along with initiatives relating to the revitalisation of Kumartuli Ghat and promotion of Kolkata’s Durga Puja heritage.

Highlighting Bengal’s geographical position, Adani described the state as a potential maritime and logistics bridge connecting India’s industrial heartland and the Northeast with the Bay of Bengal and wider Southeast Asian trade routes. The proposed investments in ports, logistics and connectivity are expected to form a significant part of the group’s long-term plans for the state.

The proposed investment programme extends beyond individual projects and covers sectors that form the backbone of industrial and economic infrastructure. Power generation and distribution, transportation networks, logistics, digital infrastructure and green manufacturing are among the areas identified by the group.

The healthcare investment, meanwhile, combines hospital infrastructure with medical education and research, potentially creating a broader healthcare ecosystem around the facility.

The announcements come at a time when West Bengal is seeking to strengthen its infrastructure and industrial base and leverage its geographical position as an eastern gateway. The proposed Adani investments, if implemented as announced, would represent a substantial long-term private-sector investment programme covering both physical and social infrastructure.

For Kolkata and the wider state, the immediate focus will be on the execution of the Adani Arogya Mandir, while the larger investment roadmap is expected to unfold across multiple sectors over the coming years.
