Dimapur, Nagaland: Vedanta Oil & Gas, India’s leading private oil and gas producer reiterated its commitment to unlocking the Northeast’s significant hydrocarbon potential at the North East Energy Summit 2026 – Nagaland Energy Chapter. The company emphasised the region’s strategic role in strengthening India’s energy security, attracting investments and creating long-term economic opportunities.
Northeast India has a rich legacy of oil and gas exploration, with some of Asia’s earliest oil discoveries made in the Digboi-Namdang region. The region has rich legacy of oil and gas production, and yet it continues to hold considerable untapped hydrocarbon resources. Vedanta Oil & Gas is building on its exploration and development expertise, including its experience in Barmer, Rajasthan, to explore opportunities across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. The company’s Rudra discovery has further strengthened its confidence in the region’s hydrocarbon prospectivity.
VOGL representatives also participated in industry panels on the region’s untapped hydrocarbon potential and Unlocking Nagaland’s Hydrocarbon Potential. Graham Richardson, Chief Development Officer; Balu Govind Meempat, Director - Northeast; and Avishkar Chauhan, Deputy Director - Northeast, highlighted the significant opportunities across the region’s underexplored oil and gas basins. They emphasized the role of advanced technology, supportive policy frameworks, and strong collaboration between governments and industry in accelerating exploration and unlocking the Northeast’s long-term energy potential.
The company’s long-term commitment to the Northeast is reflected in its investment plans. At Advantage Assam 2.0, Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal announced significant investments in oil and gas exploration and production across the region. This commitment was further strengthened at the Rising Northeast Summit with announcement of additional investments across Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram, underscoring the Group’s confidence in the Northeast’s hydrocarbon potential and its role in India’s energy future.
These investments align with the objectives of Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for the Northeast, which seeks to accelerate exploration, strengthen energy infrastructure and unlock the region’s resource potential. Closer coordination between the Centre, state governments, industry and local stakeholders will be crucial to translating this potential into sustainable energy production and regional economic growth.
Beyond energy development, Vedanta Oil & Gas continues to support community livelihoods in Assam through its CSR initiatives and empowering youth with skills and digital education.
The company believes that responsible resource development, investment and community engagement must advance together. Unlocking the Northeast’s hydrocarbon potential can contribute to India’s energy self-reliance while creating employment, encouraging industrial development and generating lasting value for local communities.
