New Delhi: Government e Marketplace (GeM) hosted a full-day orientation session titled “GeM – Transforming Public Procurement in India” for Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS) probationers at its New Delhi office, offering an in-depth look at the country’s expanding digital procurement landscape.
In an interaction during the programme, CEO Mihir Kumar said, “digital procurement is central to building a transparent, accountable and future-ready governance framework”. He added, “GeM’s role goes beyond simplifying procurement processes , it equips every stakeholder with tools that make decision-making faster, data-driven and compliant”. He further noted that GeM looks forward to Defence Accounts professionals contributing to this transformation across the Defence sector.
The day included detailed sessions led by GeM’s vertical heads and domain specialists on procurement concepts, platform-enabled solutions for buyer challenges, compliance requirements, grievance redressal systems, incident management and the operational flow of the portal. A hands-on demonstration familiarised participants with processes from demand creation and bidding to contract management and payments.
Seventeen probationers of the 2024 IDAS batch visited GeM as part of their attachment with the CGDA Headquarters, gaining practical exposure to the digital reforms shaping government procurement. The session highlighted GeM’s governance practices and technology-led improvements that have strengthened transparency, competition and efficiency across departments.
GeM stated that it will continue to work closely with Defence institutions and support upcoming public finance and procurement professionals through structured training and capacity-building initiatives.
