Bhubaneshwar: Paradip Port has achieved a significant milestone by handling 100.13 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo, setting a new record in its operational history. This achievement, recorded on December 9, 2024 comes nine days earlier than the same milestone in the previous financial year.
Despite facing market challenges such as declining export demand for iron ore and thermal coal, Paradip Port has sustained its momentum, bolstered by system improvements and operational efficiencies. The port is on track to handle an all-time record of 150 MMT of cargo during the current financial year.
Coastal thermal coal remains a substantial contributor, accounting for over 30 per cent of the total cargo volume and recording a growth of 3.57 per cent compared to the previous year. Outbound iron ore and pellet shipments have grown by 2.23 per cent, while containerised cargo has seen an impressive 123 per cent increase. Additionally, gypsum and flux volumes have risen by 26.55 per cent year-on-year. Paradip Port is increasingly positioning itself as a hub for coastal shipping in India.
Chairman PL Haranadh attributed the success to the collective efforts of stakeholders, including port employees, user industries, trade unions, and public-private partnership operators. He also acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Odisha government, Indian Railways, Customs, and other departments, which have played a pivotal role in the port’s achievements.
Deputy chairman Nilabhra Dasgupta, advisor for traffic AK Bose, and traffic manager G Edison were present during the announcement of this milestone.
