BPCL partners with Mumbai Port Authority to establish India’s first green fuel ecosystem

New Delhi: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a ‘Maharatna’ company and part of the Fortune Global 500, has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) and Mumbai Port Sustainability Foundation (MPSF) to create a cutting-edge green fuel ecosystem at Mumbai Port. This initiative marks a major step in India’s move towards clean energy solutions, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the nation’s environmental goals.

The agreement was signed during the launch of the Cruise Bharat Mission, which was inaugurated by the Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Government of India. The collaboration aims to drive sustainable practices within the maritime sector by introducing green energy solutions, such as LNG and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at the port, and exploring the conversion of diesel-powered vessels to cleaner fuel alternatives. This will not only reduce the port’s carbon footprint but also promote the adoption of green energy among port users and the public.

BPCL, MbPA, and MPSF will also focus on waste management systems to ensure proper segregation, storage, and handling of both recyclable and non-recyclable waste at Mumbai Port. By doing so, the initiative seeks to create a cleaner, more sustainable operational environment while demonstrating responsible corporate practices.

BPCL’s leadership in green fuel innovation is reflected in its plans to achieve net zero emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2040. The company is actively investing in renewable energy solutions and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, with plans to introduce EV charging stations at around 7,000 fuel stations over the next five years. This partnership with MbPA aligns with BPCL’s broader strategy to lead India’s energy transition while enhancing its role in the maritime sector.

BPCL is one of the largest integrated energy companies in India, with extensive operations across refining, distribution, and marketing. The company’s refining capacity is spread across its facilities in Mumbai, Kochi, and Bina, with a combined capacity of around 35.3 million metric tonnes per annum. Its vast marketing infrastructure includes over 22,000 fuel stations, 6,250 LPG distributorships, and numerous other installations and service stations.

By driving sustainable energy practices and investing in green technologies, BPCL aims to contribute meaningfully to India’s global sustainability commitments while enhancing its own environmental and social impact.
