New Delhi: National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited has been granted Navratna status by the Government of India, according to an order issued by the Department of Public Enterprises under the Ministry of Finance on 30 August 2024. This recognition provides NHPC with greater operational and financial autonomy.
R.K. Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC, described this achievement as a significant milestone for the company, acknowledging the trust and support of the Ministry of Power in enabling NHPC to reach this status. He emphasised NHPC's vital role in harnessing the hydropower potential of India and highlighted the company's expansion into wind and solar energy.
The Navratna status is expected to enhance NHPC’s decision-making capabilities, improve efficiency, and empower employees. It will support the company’s capital expenditure and investment plans, facilitate growth, and expand its market presence.
With this status, NHPC gains increased authority to establish joint ventures, open overseas offices, and access new markets. The company also anticipates strengthened technological alliances, fostering innovation, and enhancing its market position. Additionally, it will have the capability to engage in mergers and acquisitions, further boosting its market share.
NHPC currently has a total installed capacity of 7,144.20 MW and is actively involved in constructing projects totalling 10,442.70 MW, including the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower project in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, and the 2,880 MW Dibang Multi-purpose project in Arunachal Pradesh. The company is working towards achieving an installed capacity of 23,000 MW by 2032 and 50,000 MW by 2047, with over 50,000 MW of projects currently in various stages of development. /BI
