NLC India Limited marks a decade of renewable energy generation

New Delhi: NLC India Limited, a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Coal, celebrates its 10th year of renewable energy generation, marking a major milestone in its sustainability journey. It was on September 28, 2015, that the company commissioned its first solar photovoltaic power plant, a 10 MW facility in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu. This event marked the company's foray into renewable energy as part of a broader national shift towards cleaner power.

Responding to the Prime Minister's call in 2015 for a transition from "megawatts to gigawatts" in renewable energy, NLC India became the first Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) to reach 1 GW of green energy generation. The company currently operates 1,380 MW of solar and 51 MW of wind power facilities. Over the years, NLC India has produced 1,234 crore units of green energy, significantly reducing carbon emissions by 1 crore tonnes.

Looking ahead, NLC India plans to expand its renewable energy capacity to 10,000 MW by 2030. To achieve this goal, it has formed two subsidiaries, NLC India Renewables Ltd (NIRL) for asset monetization and NLC India Green Energy Ltd (NIGEL) to lead clean energy initiatives. The company’s membership in the International Solar Alliance further highlights its dedication to sustainable energy.

With projects under development in Neyveli, Barsingsar (Rajasthan), Gujarat, and Assam, NLC India is on track to boost its renewable capacity. Recently, on August 28, 2024, the company signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Telangana’s state DISCOMs for 200 MW of solar energy at a competitive rate under the Central Public Sector Undertaking scheme. This agreement reinforces NLC India’s role in advancing the country’s renewable energy ambitions.
