Delhi Police introduces official emblem for K-9 unit

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Thursday unveiled the official emblem of its Dog Squad, also known as the K-9 Unit, marking a new identity for one of its most specialised wings.

Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Devesh Chandra Srivastava said that the emblem will be displayed on uniforms, jackets, and gear of all K-9 unit personnel.

The K-9 Unit, set up in 1967, functions under the administrative control of the Crime Branch. Its trained dogs are deployed across Delhi for crime detection, tracking, and the identification of explosives and narcotics.

Tracker dogs assist at crime scenes by recovering stolen property or identifying suspects through scent evidence. Explosive detection dogs carry out anti-sabotage checks at public venues, VVIP routes, and high-profile events. Narcotics detection dogs help identify illegal substances in homes, vehicles, luggage, and on individuals suspected of trafficking or possession.

Currently, the unit operates from 10 locations across the city, including Model Town, Chanakyapuri, Kalyanpuri, Daryaganj, Sabzi Mandi, Maurya Enclave, Sector-12 RK Puram, Sector-16A Dwarka, Janakpuri and Pushp Vihar.

The unit also plays a visible role in urban security, conducting patrols and checks at markets, malls, transport hubs and other important installations. It is regularly deployed during major national events such as Independence Day and Republic Day, as well as during visits by dignitaries to Rashtrapati Bhavan, Supreme Court, Vigyan Bhawan, Hyderabad House and other locations.

To maintain high standards, the dogs are trained alongside institutions such as the NSG, BSF, CRPF and Delhi Police Academy. The unit also ensures that its animals are cared for in a hygienic and stress-free environment to support their performance and reliability in safeguarding the capital.
