Alappuzha: Cherthala’s police stations are undergoing a quiet but significant transformation. Pattanakkad and Muhamma police stations have received ISO 9001:2015 certification, recognising their improved service delivery and citizen-friendly approach. The certification marks a major step towards modernising police operations and enhancing public access to policing services.
The reforms have been implemented under the leadership of Harish Jain, IPS, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Cherthala, who has focused on streamlining operations and making policing more efficient. Over the past three months, a systematic approach has been adopted to clear long-pending petitions, achieving a 95% compliance rate in resolving them within 15 days. Steps are being taken to reach 100% efficiency in grievance redressal. At the same time, old and non-functional equipment cluttering police stations has been cleared, with over 500 condemned items returned to the district police store, creating a more organised and functional work environment.
Another major issue being tackled is the accumulation of unclaimed vehicles. A database has been created to categorise them, and owners have been contacted to reclaim their property. Vehicles unrelated to criminal cases are being processed for auction, with 110 already identified for disposal. This initiative is expected to free up valuable space within police stations and improve overall accessibility.
Administrative processes have also been streamlined with a shift towards paperless operations. Investigation records, case diaries, and charge sheets are now being handled digitally through ICOPS, the Kerala State version of CCTNS. This transition has significantly reduced paperwork, saving an estimated 50,000 sheets of paper per month.
Infrastructure improvements have been another area of focus. Given Kerala’s frequent heavy rainfall, steps have been taken to protect police buildings from water damage. Truss work, waterproofing, and repainting have been carried out at Kuthiathode police station, with similar measures planned for others.
With the ongoing work in Cherthala, the aim is to standardise these improvements across the sub-division, creating a more effective and citizen-friendly policing system. Similar modernisation efforts had earlier been introduced at Peramangalam police station in Thrissur under the same officer, reinforcing a model for better policing practices.
