Srinagar: Once guns boomed in picturesque Trehgam Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, now there is calm, signalling peace and development.

Welcome to Trehgam Kupwara, where a remarkable transformation is taking shape owing to the government's intervention through the Karkhandar Scheme. The government-driven initiative is breathing a new life in the region, empowering women artisans, mirroring the larger narrative of transformation and empowerment unfolding across the region.

Artisan Razia Sultan is a glowing example of how her life has transformed by the government support. Sultan has been receiving regular support from the Handicrafts Department in Kupwara. She has utilized this support to create an impressive 285-meter crewel cloth, from which she produced 236 crewel-embroidered cushion covers. Over the last five months, her craft has generated a revenue of Rs 1,60,000.

Now, Sultan has successfully established an entrepreneurial venture. She has been training at least 200 girls in crewel embroidery and in chain stitch units at Trehgam. Through her dedication and mentorship, Sultan not only inspires others but also earns a regular income of around Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000 every month. 

Sultan's journey exemplifies the deep, positive impact of the Karkhandar Scheme. The initiative besides empowering women is also reviving traditional crafts that are languishing fast. Crafts like walnut wood carving, silver filigree, carpet weaving and more have been chosen for revival. These crafts not only carry a rich cultural heritage but also have the potential to generate sustainable income for artisans and their communities.

Under the Karkhandar Scheme, artisans receive financial support. They are provided with a monthly stipend of Rs 2000, which allows them to pursue their craft. The support has not only improved their economic prospects, but has also instilled a sense of empowerment and self-reliance. The artisans are also provided access to advanced training in design and marketing. They are also supported to establish their businesses by providing logistic assistance and an honorarium to meritorious trainees.

The success of the scheme is not just about preserving crafts; it's about empowering women and communities to build a stronger and more resilient tomorrow.
