Number of most affected Naxalism-hit districts in India reduced to six

New Delhi: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah said that the number of districts most affected by Left-Wing Extremism has come down to six from twelve, marking a significant step towards making India free of Naxalism.

In a post on X, Amit Shah said that the Modi government is working towards a strong, secure, and prosperous India with a firm approach to Naxalism and sustained efforts for comprehensive development. The government aims to eliminate Naxalism completely by 31 March 2026.

Taking a giant stride towards building a Naxal-free Bharat, today our nation achieved a new milestone by significantly reducing the number of districts most affected by left-wing extremism to just 6 from 12. The Modi government is building a Sashakt, Surakshit and Samriddh Bharat…

The total number of Naxalism-affected districts in the country was 38. Among these, the number of most affected districts has been reduced from 12 to 6, the number of districts of concern has come down from 9 to 6, and the number of other LWE-affected districts has dropped from 17 to 6.

Of the six most affected districts, four are in Chhattisgarh, Bijapur, Kanker, Narayanpur, and Sukma. One is in Jharkhand, West Singhbhum, and one in Maharashtra, Gadchiroli.

The number of districts of concern, which require additional resources beyond those provided to the worst-affected districts, has also reduced from nine to six. These include Alluri Sitarama Raju in Andhra Pradesh, Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Malkangiri in Odisha, and Bhadradri-Kothagudem in Telangana.

Due to sustained action against Naxalism, the number of other LWE-affected districts has also decreased from 17 to 6. These include Dantewada, Gariaband, and Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki in Chhattisgarh, Latehar in Jharkhand, Nuapada in Odisha, and Mulugu in Telangana.

The most affected districts and districts of concern receive financial assistance of ₹30 crore and ₹10 crore respectively from the central government under the Special Central Assistance (SCA) scheme to bridge gaps in public infrastructure. Additionally, special projects are sanctioned as needed.

The sharp decline in Naxal-affected areas in the past year is largely due to the establishment of new security camps in insurgency-hit regions and development initiatives such as road expansion, improved transport, electricity, water supply, and welfare schemes reaching remote villages.
