New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched the Aadhaar Good Governance portal to streamline the approval process for Aadhaar authentication requests. This initiative aims to make Aadhaar more accessible, improve ease of living, and enhance service delivery for citizens.
The portal was launched by S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, in the presence of Bhuvnesh Kumar, CEO, UIDAI, Inder Pal Singh Sethi, Director General, NIC, Manish Bhardwaj, DDG, UIDAI, Amod Kumar, DDG, UIDAI, and other senior officials from MeitY, UIDAI, and NIC.
The Aadhaar Good Governance portal (http://swik.meity.gov.in) comes into effect following the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (Social Welfare, Innovation, Knowledge) Amendment Rules, 2025, notified under the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016 in late January 2025. This amendment is aimed at increasing transparency and inclusivity in decision-making.
Aadhaar is one of the most trusted digital identification systems in the world, with over a billion Indians using it for authentication more than 100 billion times over the past decade. The expansion of Aadhaar authentication under the new amendment will further enhance ease of living and provide hassle-free access to a wider range of services.
Krishnan noted that the launch of this portal, along with continuous improvements in related systems, will accelerate the process of incorporating new use cases in good governance and service accessibility. Kumar highlighted Aadhaar’s role in strengthening India’s digital economy and improving governance, stating that the new platform will simplify submission and approval processes for entities seeking authentication services.
The amendment enables both government and private entities to use Aadhaar authentication for public interest services in areas such as innovation, knowledge dissemination, and improving access to essential services. It will benefit both service providers and users by ensuring secure and trusted transactions. Aadhaar number holders will now have seamless access to services in sectors including hospitality, healthcare, credit rating, e-commerce, education, and aggregator platforms. Service providers can also use Aadhaar authentication for staff attendance, customer onboarding, e-KYC verification, exam registrations, and other processes.
The portal serves as a comprehensive guide for entities applying for Aadhaar authentication, offering detailed standard operating procedures for onboarding. Additionally, face authentication may be integrated into customer-facing applications, enabling anytime, anywhere authentication.
As part of its efforts to make Aadhaar more accessible and improve service delivery, MeitY had proposed rules allowing Aadhaar authentication by entities beyond government ministries and departments. The proposed amendments were shared on the ministry’s website, and feedback was invited from stakeholders and the public in April and May 2023.
