Uber launches India’s first-ever water transport service – Uber Shikara in Srinagar

Srinagar. Uber has introduced its first water transport service in India, offering tourists the unique experience of pre-booking shikara rides on the iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar through its app. Named Uber Shikara, this limited-period service blends tradition with modern technology to enhance the tourism experience in the beautiful landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir.

In its first phase, Uber Shikara has partnered with seven shikara operators and plans to onboard more partners as the service gains traction. The initiative aims to boost tourism while creating grassroots economic opportunities for the local shikara community. "Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition to give a seamless experience to travellers for their shikara ride. We are proud to create this iconic experience enhancing accessibility and uplifting tourism in the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir," said Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India, and South Asia.




Key Highlights of Uber Shikara

Booking Details: Shikara rides can be booked for a period of one hour between 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Bookings can be made 12 hours prior and up to 15 days in advance.

Departure Point: Rides start from Shikara Ghat No. 16 on Dal Lake.

Fixed Rates: Fares are government-determined, ensuring a transparent experience without the hassle of bargaining.

Passenger Limit: Each shikara can accommodate up to 4 passengers.


How to Book an Uber Shikara Ride

1. Open the updated Uber app on your smartphone.

2. Enter ‘Shikara Ghat No. 16’ as the start and end point in the ‘Where to’ bar.

3. Select the Uber Shikara ride option.

4. Choose the desired date and time for your ride.

5. Confirm your pick-up location (Ghat 16).

6. Click “Book” to finalize your reservation.




A Boost for Local Economy

Uber Shikara is not only expected to enhance the tourist experience but also uplift the local shikara operator community. Wali Mohammad Bhatt, President of the Shikara Owners Association, expressed optimism about the initiative, stating, “Uber service will boost shikara operators' business as the app facilitates bookings at fixed rates, eliminating bargaining and providing relief to tourists."

Notably, Uber is not charging any service fees from its shikara partners, ensuring that the entire fare amount is passed directly to the operators.

This initiative also marks Uber’s first water transport service in Asia, after similar successful services in Venice, Italy, and other European locations.
