Chennai: Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited (AHEL) and Apollo Foundation highlighted the achievements of their ‘Total Health’ initiative in Aragonda, Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district, on October 27. The initiative has provided more than 10.89 lakh nutritious meals over the past 13 years as part of its efforts to improve healthcare, community welfare and development in rural areas.
Launched by Apollo Foundation in Aragonda in 2013, Total Health aims to expand healthcare beyond hospital-based treatment by integrating preventive healthcare with education, nutrition, safe drinking water, skill development and livelihood opportunities. The programme focuses not just on medical treatment but also on the overall well-being of rural communities.
According to Apollo, the programme has expanded to more than 23 locations and has conducted over two lakh yoga training sessions over the years to promote physical fitness and healthier lifestyle choices. It has also created employment opportunities for more than 300 rural women through textile and jute production, helping them develop skills and earn a livelihood.
The Apollo hospital in Aragonda, established in 2000 as a 50-bed secondary care facility, has treated more than 1.67 lakh patients, performed over 12,000 surgeries and conducted more than 1,000 knee replacement surgeries. These milestones reflect the expansion of healthcare services in rural areas and the importance of ensuring access to quality and affordable medical care.
The initiative demonstrates how an integrated, community-led approach to healthcare can contribute to sustainable development and serve as a model for similar efforts in other states and underserved regions.
