New Delhi: The Government of India has extended the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood by one year, effective beyond his original term ending May 24, 2025. Sood, who assumed office on May 25, 2023, for a two-year term, will now serve until May 24, 2026.
The decision was formalized by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) following recommendations from a high-level selection committee. The committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, included Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The panel convened on May 5, 2025, to deliberate on the extension.
Praveen Sood, a 1986-batch Indian IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre, was serving as Karnataka’s Director General of Police (DGP) prior to his appointment as CBI Director. Born in 1964 in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, Sood holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, a postgraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru, and advanced studies from the Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University, New York.
Recognized for his proactive leadership, Sood has overseen investigations of high-profile cases involving prominent individuals and complex inter-state and international matters. His tech-forward approach strengthened Karnataka’s Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) in collaboration with the judiciary.
The extension highlights the government’s confidence in Sood’s leadership of the CBI, India’s premier investigative agency, as it continues to handle sensitive and high-stakes cases.
