India appoints Vishwesh Negi as next ambassador to Iran

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday appointed senior diplomat Vishwesh Negi as India's next Ambassador to Iran.

Negi, a 2002-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the MEA. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.

Announcing the appointment, the MEA said in a statement, "Vishwesh Negi, presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Negi succeeds Rudra Gaurav Shresth, who has been serving as India's envoy to Tehran.

India and Iran share longstanding civilisational ties and maintain cooperation in areas including trade, connectivity, energy and regional security. The appointment comes as New Delhi continues to engage closely with countries across West Asia.

India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy remain the preferred means to address regional challenges and ensure peace and stability.
