New Delhi: Economist Ashok Kumar Lahiri formally assumed charge as the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog on Friday, marking a significant transition in the country’s top policy think tank at a time when India is pushing ahead with reforms, economic transformation and the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Lahiri succeeds Suman Bery and brings with him decades of experience in economic policymaking, fiscal management and institutional reforms. A former Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India and member of the 15th Finance Commission, Lahiri has also held key positions across academia, public institutions and international organisations.
In a statement welcoming him, NITI Aayog said Lahiri’s expertise would further strengthen the institution’s focus on evidence-based policymaking and strategic economic transformation. The think tank expressed confidence that his leadership would contribute significantly to India’s development agenda across sectors.
The appointment comes amid a broader reconstitution of NITI Aayog aimed at reinforcing the government’s long-term policy architecture. The Centre has recently inducted new full-time members into the body as it sharpens focus on innovation, cooperative federalism, governance reforms and sustainable growth.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier described NITI Aayog as a vital pillar of India’s policymaking framework and expressed confidence that Lahiri’s experience in economics and public policy would energise the country’s reform journey.
Widely regarded as one of India’s prominent economists, Lahiri has played a crucial role in shaping fiscal and economic policy over the years. His appointment is expected to add greater depth to the government’s push for data-driven governance and long-term strategic planning as India navigates global economic uncertainties while pursuing high growth ambitions.
