Mother's Day Special | Meghalaya welcomes its first woman DGP

Shillong: On this special occasion of Mother's Day, Meghalaya commemorates a historic moment in its law enforcement history with the appointment of its first woman Director General of Police (DGP), Idashisha Nongrang, IPS.

Idashisha Nongrang, a veteran Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1992 batch, has been appointed to lead the Meghalaya Police force from May 20, succeeding Lajja Ram Bishnoi upon his retirement on May 19. Nongrang belongs to the Khasi community, one of the three major tribes in the state. She is currently serving as the Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards, bringing a wealth of experience and leadership to her new role.

Nongrang's appointment is a significant step towards gender inclusivity and empowerment in Northeast India. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed his pride on Twitter, stating, “Heartiest congratulations to Smti Idashisha Nongrang, IPS, on her appointment as the new DGP. Breaking barriers and making history, she became the first tribal lady from our state to hold this position, a moment of immense pride for all of us. Wishing her all the best!”

She will serve as the State’s police chief until May 19, 2026.

The Union Public Service Commission had recommended Nongrang's name, along with Ram Prasad Meena, ADG of the Border Security Force, and Deepak Kumar, ADG of the Central Reserve Police Force, for the post. Nongrang's ascent to the top law enforcement position sets a precedent for future generations of women leaders. Prior to this, in January 2024, Rashmi Shukla, IPS was appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Maharashtra. Shukla was also the first woman to hold this post in the state.

This Mother's Day, Meghalaya celebrates not only the nurturing spirit of mothers but also the strength and leadership potential of women across all spheres of society. /BI
