New Delhi: Delhi will have a new Chief Secretary from October 1, with the Ministry of Home Affairs appointing 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer Rajeev Verma to the post.
The official order stated, “With the approval of the Competent Authority, Rajeev Verma is hereby transferred from Chandigarh to Delhi and posted as Chief Secretary, GNCTD (Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi), with effect from October 1, 2025, or from whichever is later the date of joining.”
Verma, who holds an MTech degree from IIT, succeeds Dharmendra, who had taken charge in September last year and is retiring this month.
Currently serving as Chief Secretary of Chandigarh, Verma has earlier held the same position in Puducherry. He is a native of Uttar Pradesh and is familiar with Delhi’s governance structure, having worked as Finance and Revenue Secretary between 2018 and 2022. He also served as Principal Commissioner of Housing and Urban Affairs with the Delhi Development Authority in 2017–2018, and has handled senior responsibilities in the city’s Transport department.
A senior official from the Finance department described him as, “He is a very nice officer and goes by the rulebook and also holds a practical approach.”
Over his three-decade-long career, Verma has also worked in the Central government. His assignments included serving as Joint Secretary in the Defence Ministry from 2013 to 2017, and postings in the Power Ministry and the Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
As Delhi’s Chief Secretary, he will oversee the city’s administration and coordinate the functioning of all departments. Among his key responsibilities will be projects of the new BJP government in the Capital, including rejuvenation of the Yamuna river, excise policy implementation, infrastructure works, and traffic management.
