New Delhi: Coal India has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation Ltd (IPRCL) to develop rail infrastructure across its operations and those of its subsidiaries. The agreement was signed in Kolkata on 5 June 2025.

“Coal India Ltd (CIL) and Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation Limited have executed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 05.06.2025 at Kolkata with an intent of development of Rail Infrastructure of CIL and its subsidiaries,” the company said in a stock exchange filing.

IPRCL is a joint venture between 11 major ports under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, which holds a 90 per cent stake, and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited under the Ministry of Railways, which holds the remaining 10 per cent. The JV was formed to create efficient rail evacuation systems and improve port capacities and throughput.

Coal India is responsible for more than 80 per cent of India’s domestic coal output. In FY25, the company produced 781.1 million tonnes (MT) of coal, falling short of its target of 838 MT. For FY26, it has set a production target of 875 MT and aims to achieve an offtake of 900 MT.
