NTPC marks 50th anniversary with new strides in green technology and sustainable initiatives

New Delhi: NTPC Ltd, India’s largest power utility, celebrated its 50th Raising Day on November 8, marking half a century of contributions to the nation’s energy landscape. The event, held at the Engineering Office Complex in Noida, saw NTPC CMD Gurdeep Singh hoist the company flag, joined by directors and senior officials, with employees participating virtually from across all locations.

In a significant move toward green technology, NTPC launched hydrogen-fuel buses that will soon begin operations in Leh, showcasing the company’s continued commitment to advancing sustainable transport solutions. Additionally, NTPC announced a groundbreaking achievement at its Vindhyachal plant: the synthesis of methanol from CO₂ captured from flue gases combined with hydrogen produced through a PEM electrolyser. Both the CO₂ capture and methanol production technologies represent pioneering efforts globally, advancing NTPC’s role in carbon management and sustainable fuel development.

Furthering its commitment to sustainable advancements, NTPC is also working on Gen-4 ethanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel. A milestone achievement includes the development of the first indigenous catalyst for methanol synthesis, adding to the company’s exploration of hydrogen, carbon capture, and other eco-friendly innovations. NTPC also unveiled its 50-year anniversary logo, featuring an infinity loop symbolising its dedication to growth, resilience, and future possibilities in India’s energy sector.

Recognising talent within the NTPC family, outstanding achievements of employees' children were celebrated, and new IT applications were launched to enhance operational efficiency. A special comic book detailing NTPC’s Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), the company’s flagship CSR program, was released, highlighting its positive impact on over 10,000 girls from rural communities.

Reflecting on NTPC’s journey, Gurdeep Singh paid tribute to the visionaries who laid its foundations, including founding chairman DV Kapoor. He remarked that NTPC, symbolising 50 years of resilience and growth, remains steadfast in its mission to power India’s future. With expanding efforts in renewable energy, including nuclear, NTPC looks forward to shaping a sustainable energy landscape for generations to come.

With a diverse portfolio spanning thermal, hydro, solar, and wind energy, NTPC supplies a quarter of India’s electricity needs. Committed to clean and affordable energy, NTPC continues to push for innovative practices and clean energy solutions, aiming to build a greener future for India.
