
Raipur: SJVN Limited has signed an initial agreement to develop a 1,800 MW pumped hydro storage project at Kotpali in Chhattisgarh, with an estimated investment of ₹9,500 crore. The company has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Chhattisgarh and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL) for the project.
The Kotpali pumped storage project, located in Balrampur district, is designed as an off-stream closed-loop system with an installed capacity of 1,800 MW. It is expected to generate approximately 3,967 million units of energy annually. The project is also expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for around 5,000 people during the development phase.
SJVN, formerly known as Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam, is a public sector undertaking under the Navratna category, engaged in hydroelectric power generation and transmission. Established in 1988 as Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation, it was initially a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh. The company operates a total hydropower capacity of 1,972 MW through its three hydropower plants—Nathpa Jhakri, Rampur, and Naitwar Mori. Additionally, it has an installed capacity of 97.6 MW in wind power and 396.9 MW in solar power.
