NTPC and IIT Bombay roll out AI-ML programme to prepare workforce for future energy needs

Mumbai: NTPC Western Region-I Headquarters, Mumbai, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, has launched a five-day certification programme on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI-ML) for its employees. The programme began today at the Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Bombay, with 30 participants drawn from NTPC projects and stations across the country.

The initiative has been introduced by NTPC Western Region-I to build organisational capability in AI and ML and align these skills with applications in the power and energy sector.

The academic guidance for the course is being provided by Prof. M. Radhakrishna, Head of the Department of Earth Sciences, along with Ajey Mehta, Executive Officer and CEO of CEP IIT Bombay, and senior faculty members Prof. Vikram Vishal, Prof. Satyam Priyadarshy and Prof. Anand Singh. The curriculum covers modules on data processing, supervised and unsupervised learning, predictive maintenance, time series forecasting, deep learning and the use of generative AI in energy systems.

Speaking at the launch, Vandana Chaturvedi, Regional Head of HR (West-I), said the programme reflected NTPC’s commitment to preparing its workforce for the future of the energy sector. “The knowledge of AI and ML will help NTPC in enhancing operational efficiency, driving innovation in power generation, and strengthening our transition towards sustainable and technology-driven growth. Through collaborations with premier institutes like IIT Bombay, we are creating a strong foundation for NTPC’s future readiness,” she said.

Ajey Mehta noted that IIT Bombay was pleased to partner with NTPC in a capacity-building initiative of this scale. “IIT Bombay has developed specialised modules to address sector-specific challenges, and this collaboration is an opportunity to apply AI and ML in ways that will create tangible value for the power industry,” he said.

Prof. Vikram Vishal added that the course had been designed to combine conceptual learning with real-world case studies in energy and sustainability. He expressed the hope that by training NTPC professionals, the gap between emerging technologies and their practical deployment in large-scale energy systems would be bridged.

The collaboration between NTPC and IIT Bombay is expected to advance the integration of emerging technologies into the power sector through structured employee learning and development.
