New Delhi: Vedanta Aluminium has entered into an agreement with state-owned gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd for the supply of natural gas to its smelter at Jharsuguda, Odisha. The company, a leading aluminium producer in India, has signed a gas sales agreement with GAIL Gas Ltd, a subsidiary of GAIL (India) Ltd.
This transition to natural gas, expected to be operational by the end of next year, will significantly lower Vedanta Aluminium’s carbon footprint, reducing emissions by an estimated 47,292 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually, the company stated. Vedanta has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 through a dual strategy of increasing renewable energy usage and creating carbon sinks via afforestation efforts.
“Our partnership with GAIL Gas Ltd is a testament to our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing cleaner energy solutions,” said Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-executive Director at Vedanta and Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Ltd.
GAIL Gas Ltd will construct a 7.5-km pipeline to deliver approximately 32,000 standard cubic metres of natural gas per day under a five-year contract, which will commence upon the commissioning of the pipeline. This move towards cleaner energy is a key step in Vedanta Aluminium’s broader goal of driving a clean energy transition across its operations.
“This agreement aligns with our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance production capabilities, meeting India’s growing demand for aluminium in critical sectors,” said Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium.
Vedanta Aluminium produced 2.37 million tonnes of aluminium in FY24.
