Vigil Aunty vs cyber scammers: HDFC’s street-smart answer to digital fraud

Tackles the growing threat of UPI fraud, phishing links, QR code scams and fake helplines

Vigil Aunty vs cyber scammers: HDFC’s street-smart answer to digital fraud

New Delhi: A missed call, a fake QR code or a convincing customer-care number is often all it takes to drain a bank account today. As digital payments surge across India, cyber fraud has quietly become a daily risk—especially for first-time and young digital users. It is this reality that HDFC Bank has addressed through Vigil Aunty, one of the standout initiatives highlighted in the bank’s newly launched Parivartan CSR Report, marking ten years of its corporate social responsibility programme.

The first edition of the Parivartan report documents a decade of HDFC Bank’s work across its focus areas, while also signalling how CSR is adapting to new-age challenges. Vigil Aunty reflects this shift, placing digital safety at the heart of financial inclusion.

Launched as a national awareness campaign, Vigil Aunty tackles the growing threat of UPI fraud, phishing links, QR code scams and fake helplines. Instead of technical jargon or fear-driven messaging, the campaign brings to life a sharp, witty, next-door neighbour who calls out scams before they happen. Familiar, non-judgmental and humorous, Vigil Aunty makes cyber safety feel like practical street wisdom rather than a lecture.

The impact has been wide-ranging. The campaign has reached over 497 million people across social media and directly made more than 23 lakh individuals aware of financial fraud risks. Rolled out in 10 regional languages, it has seen strong engagement among youth and first-time workers, while also being integrated into select employee sessions. Through 130-plus reels, Vigil Aunty has addressed over 60 types of financial frauds, building a “Vigil Army” of more than one million followers.

As digital banking becomes the default, HDFC Bank’s decade-long CSR journey under Parivartan underscores a simple message: access without awareness is incomplete. In today’s fraud-prone environment, Vigil Aunty shows how timely, relatable communication can turn awareness into the first line of defence.
