Visakhapatnam: Google and the Andhra Pradesh government have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a 1-gigawatt (GW) AI-powered data centre in Visakhapatnam. The ₹87,520 crore (approximately USD 15 billion) investment is expected to generate around ₹10,000 crore in revenue for the state over time.

Minister of State for Communications Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar said the project will create 5,000–6,000 direct jobs and 20,000–30,000 total jobs in Andhra Pradesh over the next five years. He described the initiative as a defining milestone in the state’s digital transformation journey.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh, and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.

Kurian said the upcoming facility will be Google’s largest investment outside the United States and will position Visakhapatnam as a major global connectivity hub. The project also includes plans for a subsea cable network linking Visakhapatnam with Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and several other countries, enhancing international data connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the development, stating,

“Delighted by the launch of the Google AI Hub in the dynamic city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This multi-faceted investment that includes gigawatt-scale data center infrastructure, aligns with our vision to build a Viksit Bharat. It will be a powerful force in democratising technology. It will also ensure AI for All, delivering cutting-edge tools to our citizens, boosting our digital economy and securing India’s place as a global technology leader.”

The AI hub is part of Andhra Pradesh’s larger plan to develop Visakhapatnam into a leading technology and data centre hub. The state government has already proposed a 500-acre “Data City” in Madhurawada to attract further investment in IT and digital infrastructure.

With this initiative, Andhra Pradesh is set to emerge as a crucial node in India’s AI and data ecosystem, positioning Visakhapatnam at the heart of the country’s next wave of digital growth.
