Mumbai: Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to introduce a digital-first passenger communication system built around free high-speed Wi-Fi when it begins commercial operations on December 25.
Developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd, a subsidiary of the Adani Group, the airport will use its Wi-Fi network to deliver real-time information directly to passengers through the Adani OneApp. Sources said the app will act as a virtual assistant, guiding travellers across key touchpoints inside the terminal.
Once connected to the network, passengers will receive flight status alerts, boarding gate details, schedules and other operational updates on their mobile phones. The system is expected to reduce dependence on physical help desks and static display boards, while enabling more personalised and timely communication.
The Adani OneApp will also provide information on food and beverage outlets, retail stores, lounges and other facilities within the terminal, allowing travellers to plan their time more efficiently while at the airport.
According to officials, NMIAL will offer free Wi-Fi speeds of up to 10 Mbps throughout the terminal. The network has been designed to remain stable during peak hours and support services such as digital payments, app-based cab bookings, emails, streaming and video calls.
As part of its connectivity framework, NMIAL has partnered with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd to roll out mobile network services at the airport. The collaboration aligns with the government’s Made in India initiative, with BSNL deploying indigenous telecom infrastructure developed by C-DoT, Tejas Networks and TCS.
BSNL is currently expanding its indigenous 4G network across the country, which is also 4G and 5G-ready, with plans to upgrade to 5G in major cities, including Mumbai. At Navi Mumbai airport, BSNL will provide voice and data services for passengers, airport staff and operational requirements, complementing the Wi-Fi network.
Built as Mumbai’s second airport, Navi Mumbai International Airport will initially handle a limited number of flights before expanding operations in phases. Officials said system trials and operational readiness checks are underway to ensure that digital services are fully functional ahead of the launch.
The airport is being developed by NMIAL, in which the Adani Group holds a 74 percent stake. The first phase, built at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore, will have the capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually, with plans to scale up to 90 million passengers in the future, easing pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport and supporting long-term growth in air traffic.
