Work, live, play with AI: India’s first smart township coming up at Bidadi

Bengaluru: Karnataka is set to launch India’s first and largest artificial intelligence-powered city, the Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township (GBIT), at Bidadi on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway. The township, spread across 8,493 acres covering nine villages, is expected to open in three years and will function as the state’s second central business district.

The township will follow a ‘work-live-play’ model, combining residential areas with IT hubs, start-ups, services, schools, cultural centres and hospitals. About 2,000 acres have been earmarked for AI-based industries, while 1,100 acres will be developed into green spaces and parks. A 300-metre-wide business corridor will connect the township with highways including STRR, NH-209, NH-275 and NICE Road, easing connectivity and reducing Bengaluru’s congestion.

Of the total land, 6,731 acres is private, 750 acres government-owned, and 1,012 acres consist of waterbodies. Farmers who give up land for the project will receive annual payments of INR 30,000 to INR 50,000 per acre until they are compensated or allotted developed plots.

Alongside GBIT, the government has also announced the establishment of the country’s first quantum city at Hesaraghatta in Bengaluru. Karnataka’s science and technology minister NS Boseraju said on X that 6.17 acres of land has been sanctioned for the project. The proposed Quantum City (QCity) will include advanced laboratories, production clusters for quantum hardware and processors, a high-performance computing data centre, and incubation facilities to encourage collaboration between start-ups, industry and academia.

With these projects, Karnataka aims to strengthen its position as a hub for next-generation technologies and urban innovation.
